Global EV Sales

The global automotive industry is undergoing a major transformation. As fuel prices remain unpredictable and consumers look for more affordable and sustainable transportation, electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming the preferred choice worldwide.

According to the latest report from the International Energy Agency (IEA), global EV sales grew significantly during the second quarter of 2026, even as the overall automotive market remained under pressure.

Petrol and Diesel Vehicle Sales Continue to Decline

Global sales of petrol and diesel vehicles fell by 5% during the first half of 2026. The slowdown was largely driven by weaker demand in China and the United States, along with rising fuel prices, economic uncertainty, and changing government policies.

The recent energy crisis in the Middle East also increased fuel price volatility, encouraging more buyers to switch to electric vehicles.

Global EV Sales Jump 35%

Although EV sales started the year at a slower pace, the market rebounded strongly between April and June.

During the second quarter of 2026, global electric vehicle sales increased by 35% compared to the first quarter. More than 50 countries recorded their highest-ever EV sales during this period.

Countries showing the strongest growth include:

Overall, more than 90 countries reported higher EV sales during the first six months of 2026 compared to the same period last year.

IEA Raises Its 2026 EV Forecast

Thanks to stronger demand and continued government incentives across Europe, Latin America, and Southeast Asia, the IEA has increased its outlook for electric vehicles.

The agency now expects EVs to account for 29% of all new car sales worldwide in 2026, up from its previous forecast.

This highlights the rapid global shift toward cleaner and more efficient transportation.

China’s EV Market Shows Mixed Results

While China’s domestic EV sales are expected to remain relatively stable this year, electric vehicles are still projected to account for more than 60% of all new car sales in the country.

At the same time, China’s EV exports continue to grow rapidly. During the first half of 2026, exports nearly matched the country’s total EV exports for all of 2025.

However, more than one million exported Chinese EVs are still waiting to be sold in international markets.

Chinese EV Makers Increase Global Competition

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers are expanding quickly in international markets, putting pressure on established automakers from Japan, South Korea, Europe, and the United States.

As emerging economies are expected to generate nearly 60% of global vehicle demand over the next decade, competition in these markets will play a major role in shaping the future of the automotive industry.

Final Thoughts

The latest IEA report confirms that the global automotive market is changing rapidly. While petrol and diesel vehicle sales continue to decline, electric vehicles are gaining momentum across the world.

With improving technology, supportive government policies, and growing consumer demand, 2026 is shaping up to be another milestone year for the global EV industry.
